Fountain Art Fair 2014

I’ll be joining the Hullabaloo collective at this year’s Fountain Art Fair. Fountain focuses on emerging artists and galleries and has a lot more character than some of the bigger fairs. Join me at the opening party on Friday night from 7-12pm. Hope to see you there!

Now Open! The Art in Brooklyn Store

I’m very happy to announce a brand new endeavor – an online store at shop.artinbrooklyn.com. I started Art in Brooklyn in 2008 as a way to make art more accessible to the public. As an extension of this mission, I’ve created a series of handmade prints at an extremely affordable price of $10 each. The first series of work features portraits of the classic movie monsters: Frankenstein, Dracula, and Wolfman.

All of the works are made from original drawings and printed individually from hand carved blocks. They measure 4×5 inches and are printed with two colors. Each piece has unique characteristics created during the printing process – no two are exactly the same. Works are printed on high quality, acid free paper and signed by the artist. More designs will be added to the collection over time.

I hope you enjoy the work!

FIGUREWORKS
fine art of the human form
168 North 6th St. (1 block from Bedford Avenue “L” train)
Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY 11211

hours: Saturday and Sunday from 1-6PM

Figureworks is pleased to open the new year with over 50 self portraits from its contemporary and 20th century list of artists.

Artists create self portraits for various reasons but frequently it is done as a reflective point in their career. Securing that moment in time when they feel the need to record their presence. Similar to a journal entry, it may manifest in a quick sketch such as the drawing Philip Evergood created in 1944 documenting his life threatening surgery or Byron Browne’s ink drawing of his model with added self at his easel. These sketches were not created for exhibition purposes and are often stashed away with other personal belongings. Oppositely, some are finely executed oils done during long studio hours of self reflection, like those by Ernest Fiene and Joachim Marx. Equally personal, these significant executions are intended to preserve a specific place and time.

Additionally, a number of pieces in this exhibition were created specifically for patrons who commissioned the artist’s portraiture for their collection. This includes the drawings by Red Grooms and Chaim Gross. Others, such as McWillie Chambers and K. Saito, were executed upon request specifically for this exhibition. These types of portraits start from a very different place than those mentioned earlier. The artist, typically just the hand behind the canvas, is asked to now become the subject. Over twenty years ago, Ingrid Capozzoli Flinn had only privately done self portraits. A labor intensive oil painter, this request was very challenging for her as she was forced to spend many hours looking back into the mirror of time.

This exhibition encompasses all of these processes and emotions in a wide range of media from pencil, oil, ink and wood to glass and digital imagery. Artists from different generations and practices are represented. It is also worthy to note the diverse self portraits by couples George & Reina Gillson and William & Marguerite Zorach which reinforces the individuality and personal expression which goes into each work.
Figureworks is located at 168 N. 6th St., Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY 11211, one block from the Bedford Avenue “L” train. The gallery is open to the public Saturday and Sunday from 1-6 PM and is dedicated to exhibiting contemporary and 20th century fine art of the human form.

HBO Girls

Happy to have some paintings in the background of the new HBO show Girls. They appear in the behind the scenes documentary – Invitation to the Set.

New Work

Been working on a new series of paintings this year – figurative abstraction based on digital imaging. The paintings start with photos that I’ve manipulated with image processing software. Characteristics that are normally seen as negative aspects of digital technology (such as color shift, banding, compression artifacts, and pixelization) are enhanced to explore the unique visual language of digital imaging. Working from printouts, these images then become the subject of the paintings. Using palette knives that mimic the square shapes of pixels, I freely interpret the digital images in paint.

ArtinNewYorkCity.com Launches!

I’m happy to announce the launch of my latest project, ArtinNewYorkCity. This site will extend my work on ArtinBrooklyn to promote visual artists throughout the NYC area. After more than two years of working with ArtinBrooklyn I could see the clear need for coverage of artists throughout the city. While there are many arts-related websites and blogs, most seem to focus on the same small sliver of work by relatively well known artists. My goal is to expand that coverage and show the diversity of the current art scene which is incredibly vibrant, even during a time of economic crisis. The format of the new site will by the same, featuring works by local artists with coverage of relevant events and exhibits. I look forward to seeing you at ArtinNewYorkCity.com!
